Reducing Food Waste: A Crucial Step in our Green Journey

Food waste has emerged as a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the combined emissions of both the US and the EU. As Green Carbon Bio Energy, we recognize the urgency to combat this environmental challenge and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

According to a recent study covering 164 countries, approximately one-third of all food produced is either lost or wasted annually. This staggering amount of food waste led to a staggering 9.3 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions in 2017 alone. Amidst such waste, it is disheartening that over 800 million people experienced hunger in 2021, as per the UN’s findings.

At Green Carbon Bio Energy, we align our efforts with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to halve global food waste and reduce food losses by 2030. Our commitment extends to adopting responsible practices along the entire food supply chain – from harvest to disposal.

The study also highlights the role played by developed and developing countries in contributing to food waste emissions. While advanced technologies in developed countries aid in lower waste management emissions, developing countries often struggle with post-harvest food waste due to limited refrigeration access.

We believe that public awareness and government policies are essential to address the “huge amount” of food waste emissions. Our approach is to leverage advanced biogas technology and composting methods to tackle this crisis, reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

At Green Carbon Bio Energy, we understand that meat and animal products significantly contribute to higher emissions compared to other food types. By encouraging conscious consumer choices, we aim to reduce meat consumption, thereby lowering the overall carbon footprint.

Our efforts are also dedicated to exploring advanced technological solutions like anaerobic digestion and composting. Through composting and anaerobic digestion, we can effectively reduce emissions from food waste, minimizing its impact on the environment.

We strive to collaborate with various countries, communities, and local governments to implement tailored interventions in accordance with their unique contexts. By promoting rational food consumption behaviors and investing in innovative technologies, we can make a profound impact on reducing food waste at the consumer level.

As part of our commitment to a greener future, we advocate for “carbon labelling” on food products, helping consumers make informed choices about their environmental impact. While labeling can raise awareness, we recognize that collective efforts are crucial to achieving significant reductions in food loss and waste.

At Green Carbon Bio Energy, we are inspired by the initiatives undertaken by countries like France, China, and South Korea in combating food waste through innovative strategies such as donation policies and food recycling for biogas production.

As we progress on our green journey, we invite more stakeholders to join us in the mission to combat food waste and reduce carbon emissions. Through collective action and sustainable practices, we can pave the way towards a healthier and more resilient planet.

Let us all stand together and make a positive difference, one step at a time, in reducing food waste and building a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
